GRISWOLD SPECIAL CARE WELLNESS AND EDUCATION CENTER CELEBRATES ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Just one year after the opening of the chapter’s newest wellness effort—the GRISWOLD SPECIAL CARE Wellness and Education Center--more than 1000 chapter members have visited the center to improve their physical, emotional and spiritual well being…and just have fun!

“The Wellness Center was a dream of the Greater Delaware Valley Chapter for many years,” says Judith G. Cohen, local president, “and we’re pleased to see the many ways our members are now making use of this beautiful space.”

Located at the chapter’s Penn Jersey office at 1 Reed Street in Philadelphia, the fully accessible multi-purpose room is designed to meet the special needs of those living with MS, and programs offered in the space cover all aspects of life:  physical, emotional, spiritual, social, and educational.  “The idea of wellness is multi-faceted and can mean many different things to different people,” says Stephanie Schultze, wellness programs manager.

To date, programs offered include yoga, pilates, tai chi, music and movement, exercise for independence, as well as more spiritually based sessions including “Rekindling your Spirit,” feng shui, stress management and rejuvenating your inner self.  Other programs have included daily living skills such as financial management, managing your medical care and parenting with MS.  Some of the Center’s most popular efforts have been nutritional programs, including cooking with television’s Christina Pirello. “Cooking classes have been extremely popular,” says Schultze. “Quick, yet nutritional, cooking ideas or how to make the holidays easier are excellent for those who fatigue easily yet still want to enjoy entertaining.  Programs such as these serve several needs—emotional, social and nutritional!”

Although the GRISWOLD SPECIAL CARE Wellness and Education Center has a full range of programs scheduled for the next couple months, Schultze says, “We’re always looking for additional ideas and contacts to expand our efforts.”  If you have program ideas, please email her at stephanie.schultze@pae.nmss.org.

The chapter also has wellness programs underway at Health South Rehabilitation Hospital in Reading and at Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital in Allentown.  For more information about these programs, please call Eleni at 800-548-4611, extension 170.
