Designated MS Awareness Month in Pennsylvania
Thanks to the efforts of Mary Ryan, an active chapter
member in the Delaware County area, the month of March has been designated as
“MS Awareness Month” in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The resolution, which
was introduced in the PA House of Representatives by long time chapter
supporter and State Representative, Mario Civera, offers a chance for
additional publicity and educational awareness about multiple sclerosis
throughout the month of March.
In approving the Resolution, representatives signify
their support for the active role all Pennsylvanians should take in the
fight against MS, and support community organizations and health care
professionals for their role in providing continued funding for research and
services for those with the disease. In addition, the Resolution furthers
increased public awareness about the disease, and that asks that assistance
be provided for health care professionals in their knowledge about and of MS
diagnosis and treatment.
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is thankful for
the continuing support received from the Pennsylvania State Legislature and
recognizes that such support is in large part responsible for current level
of programs and services. At present, the National MS Society has $30
million invested in over 300 MS research investigations, with a cumulative
investment of $348 million since the first three research grants were
offered in 1947. Research goals include speeding the development of
treatments, prevention and cure of MS; understanding the disease process,
preventing damage to the nervous system, reversing damage and improving
function; and building quality of life, and the care and delivery of medical
services.
