THE NATIONAL MS SOCIETY...ONE THING PEOPLE WITH MS CAN COUNT ON

news bulletin

Dateline:  August 1, 2002

Help Get Students Involved In Reading And Helping Others With The National MS Society’s MS READaTHON

You can help instill a love of reading and helping others in students by getting your local school involved in the National MS Society’s READaTHON reading program. Registration is now open for schools to be involved with this popular reading motivation fundraiser that benefits over 9,000 area residents with multiple sclerosis. Once registered, schools are invited to host a special awareness assembly about MS featuring a representative of the National MS Society and, many times, someone who has the disease. Please call Angela DiGiuseppe at 800-548-4611, extension 116, or email her at Angela.DiGiuseppe@pae.nmss.org for information on how to involve your local school in the fight against MS. “You can help us build awareness for MS by asking your child’s teacher or your local school administrator to join with the National MS Society in helping end multiple sclerosis,” says Ms. DiGiuseppe.

During the READaTHON, students read as many books as possible during a four-week period, while gaining pledges from family and friends for each book read. Participants are eligible for prizes based on the number of books read and money raised. Pledges raised through the event help fund community programs for those with MS and ongoing research projects throughout the world into the causes and effects of the disease. Since the nationwide inception of the READaTHON in 1974, more than 4 million students have taken part in the program, offering several generations of young people an example of how reading can help make a difference.

Kristen Polovoy, a chapter member who was recently diagnosed, was first made aware of multiple sclerosis many years ago during her participation in the READaTHON. “Twenty years ago, I read around 200 books to raise funds for MS and to get an award, but what I really received was information and treatment when I needed it. I have learned first hand how important it is to increase awareness and raise funds to help those with the disease,” she says.

The money Kristen raised helped fund groundbreaking research and programs that led to the FDA approval of the five treatments for the various forms of MS. She is currently taking Avonex, and is heavily involved in the chapter through the MS WALK and Leadership Class Programs. “The program not only motivated me to read a lot of books, but it also made me aware of MS—a disease that touches many lives,” says Kristen. “I learned at a young age that I could make a difference, and now I am going to help end MS.”
