THE NATIONAL MS SOCIETY...ONE THING PEOPLE WITH MS CAN COUNT ON

news bulletin

Dateline:  October 3, 2002

The National MS Society Extends Its Thanks To All Participants, Volunteers And Chapter Clients Who Made The 2002 MS 150 City To Shore Bike Tour A Success

The hurricane stayed away, and the sun shone on the 5500 cyclists that made the 2002 MS 150 City To Shore Bike Tour the most successful event in chapter history! “The National MS Society annually supports over 300 research projects world wide in an effort to end multiple sclerosis. The incredible advances in diagnosis techniques and therapies in the last decade would never have been possible without the dedication of the volunteers and cyclists who make the MS 150 City To Shore Bike Tour such a success year after year,” says Judith G. Cohen, chapter president.

In addition to thousands of cyclists, over 1,000 volunteers supported event participants through a myriad of tasks from pouring water for thirsty cyclists to helping to unload the luggage truck. Volunteers woke up early and stayed up late to ensure the safety of riders during the two-day trek to Ocean City and back.

Chapter members turned out in droves to give a boost to pedal partners and teams along the route and at both finish lines on Saturday and Sunday. Mount Laurel resident Eileen Flynn had a front row seat to watch her team, Team ELF, as they pedaled in her honor across the finish line. Frank McCarry, the inspiration behind ‘Team GSK/Frank And His Friends’ made his annual trip to the Saturday night award ceremony hosted by Chapter Vice-Chairman Larry Kane and poet, pedal partner and Cherry Hill resident Rochelle Gealt posted her newest tribute poem for all to see. “Whether it was a grand gesture of thanks or a simple postcard with a hand-written note, our members were instrumental in the success of the tour by inspiring cyclists on to great success,” says Ms. Cohen.

Funds from the MS 150 City To Shore Bike Tour support educational programs like the Annual Meeting on Monday, November 11 at the Adam’s Mark Hotel, Philadelphia. During this event, hundreds of chapter clients and their families will meet with medical professionals to learn more about the disease, and hear the keynote address given by Dr. Robert Grossman on the use of the MRI as a diagnostic tool in MS. Other events and forums made possible through funds raised by the bike tour include series on fitness, employment, and advocacy for disabled rights.
