The National MS Society Extends A Sincere Thanks To All Participants
And Volunteers Who Made The 1999 MS 150 City To Shore Bike Tour A Success
The Greater Delaware Valley Chapter of the National MS Society and the
thousands of people it serves extends a sincere thanks to over 4,000
cyclists and 1,200 volunteers who participated in the 1999 MS 150 City To
Shore Bike Tour. Individuals and teams of cyclists raised over $1.4
million to help support programs and research for MS. As a MS client, it
was a magical weekend for me. The thousands of bike riders and volunteers
have inspired me to remain positive about the future, wrote Eileen L.
Flynn, the E.L.F. behind TEAM ELF.
Just as important as the funds raised, participants
raised awareness for the disease in the months preceding the event by
asking relatives, friends and co-workers to sponsor them during the ride.
Families and whole communities were brought together to ride, help or
cheer on the cyclists.
Volunteers also worked ceaselessly for months leading
up to the event, and from daylight to nightfall during the City To Shore
Bike Tour itself to feed cyclists, ensure rider safety, and place road
markers. Said first-time rider Walt Haswell, The cast of volunteers was
impressive. It was evident that safety was their number one priority
throughout every part of the Tour.
Funds from the MS 150 City To Shore Bike Tour support
educational programs like the Annual Meeting on November 1, 1999 at the
Adam’s Mark Hotel, where over 500 people with MS and their families will
meet with medical professionals to learn more about the disease. Other
events and forums made possible through funds raised by the Bike Tour
include series on fitness, employment, and disabled rights. This year
alone, the National MS Society will support 60 new research projects by
top scientists investigating many aspects of multiple sclerosis. The 60
new projects are part of a National MS Society program that will spend a
record $22.4 million in 1999 to advance research, including funding over
300 new and ongoing MS investigations in the U.S. and abroad. The Society
has funded over $260 million in research since its founding over 50 years
ago, more than any non-profit in the world.
Every research project would be impossible without
the support of the community during the bike tours, WALKs and other
fundraisers. Plans are already underway for the 20th Anniversary MS 150
City To Shore Bike Tour. To help make the next tour as successful as this
one, call Kristine DelMonte at 1-800-548-4611 to volunteer.
